Estimates. Each home's average use (U.S. Energy Information Administration survey, southern U.S., 2020) at the 2024 Texas average price of about 14.9¢ per kWh. Your plan and your home change it.

Summer bills run higher. In August, the same homes pay about 1.5 times their typical month, as the last column shows.

Find your home in the table, then compare its typical use with the kWh on your own bill.

What makes a bill bigger or smaller?

Size matters most, but not alone. A pool, an electric car or an old air conditioner all add kWh. So do more people at home during the day.

Your plan's price matters too. The same kWh can cost very different amounts on two plans, so we compare plans on your own usage.

How does Texas compare with the rest of the U.S.?

Texas homes paid about $164 a month in 2024, more than the U.S. average of about $142.

That is not because power costs more here. Each kWh cost less in Texas: about 14.9¢, against 16.5¢ nationally.

Texas homes simply use more of it: about 1,096 kWh a month, against 863 kWh. Air conditioning is a big part of that.

This average covers every Texas home, including Austin, San Antonio and the co-ops. Where you can choose a plan, your price may differ.

Does a normal bill change with the season?

Yes. A Texas bill changes a lot from month to month, and summer bills can run about twice the spring ones.

The price per kWh barely moves, so the bill follows the kWh. Here is why summer bills climb.

What do prices look like now?

In July 2026, Texas homes paid about 15.9¢ per kWh on average, up from 15.4¢ a year earlier.

Normal kWh, but a bigger bill?
